I closed two doors this year, on purpose.

The Flourishing Note™

Hi Reader,

Last week I closed out a four-part series on the blog. It is called Living in the And, and it started back in June with one honest sentence: I am holding two callings at once, and the math between them has never worked evenly.

By the last post, what I actually needed to say turned out to be smaller than I expected. Not a system for balancing everything. Just this. Not every good thing gets to be the one thing at the same time.

This year, that meant closing two doors I was not ready to close. A group program I had been imagining for a few years. A retreat I could already picture, down to the room. Both are still real to me. Both are just waiting now, until 2027, because I finally let myself believe that choosing less on purpose is not the same as failing to do enough.

Inspired in Practice

I thought sustainable visibility, the word I chose for this year, was mostly about pacing. Show up consistently, not loudly. What I did not expect is how much of it would turn out to be about subtraction.

I have spent a lot of years believing ambition means adding. More offers. More capacity. More rooms to be in at once. This year I had to unlearn that, not because I ran out of energy, though some weeks I did, but because protecting one thing well actually requires protecting it. Not just intending to.

There is a passage in Luke I kept returning to this summer, the story of Martha and Mary. Martha is doing everything that needs doing, and Jesus tells her she is anxious about many things, when only one is necessary. I used to read that as a lesson about priorities, choose the better thing. I read it differently now. I think it might be a lesson about seasons. Some of what matters to you is allowed to wait its turn without becoming less true while it waits.

Closing those two doors was not a loss. It was a season telling me the truth about what it could actually hold, and me finally believing it instead of arguing with it.

If you want the fuller version, including what I am protecting instead, I wrote it all the way out in “Choosing the And” the post that closed the series.

Reflections

I do not think this is only a Mission ENSPIRE idea. I think most of us are holding more than one good thing at a time, and most of us have never actually been told that not everything gets to be equal right now.

I asked this at the end of the blog series, and I want to ask it again here, because an inbox is a different kind of room than a comment section.

What is the one thing you are protecting this season, and what have you let wait without deciding it matters less?

This Issue's Focus

This issue I want to put the Personal Retreat Guide in front of you.

Protecting one thing this season may not mean a group retreat, or a weekend away or anyone else's permission to slow down. Most of the time it means finding an hour, maybe an afternoon and giving it to yourself on purpose.

That is what this guide is for. A framework of prompts and reflection exercises to help you quiet the noise and listen inward, whether you have two hours or two days. No elaborate planning, no room to book. Just space you give yourself.

It is free, and you can access it here:Personal Retreat Guide.

With you on the journey,

Jennifer

Keep flourishing fiercely.

The Flourishing Note™ Hi Reader, On Thursday I wrote about a list I used to build every time I was about to leave for vacation. Long. Thorough. Something I pushed myself to get through, one more item, one more email, until I had at least made a real dent in it. What changed was not the list. It was the question underneath it. Is this actually urgent, or is this just how I have trained myself to respond. If you read It Was Never About the List, you already have the fuller story. What I want to...

Dear Reader, A few weeks ago, I mentioned I am a co-author in a brand new book, Perfectly Positioned to Soar, a 90-day journal and strategy guide for purpose-driven entrepreneurs ready to go from hidden to higher income. Launch day is one week away, and I wanted to give you a closer look at what I actually wrote. The book is a collaboration with Carol J. Dunlop, The Online WOW! Strategist, and 9 other brilliant expert co-authors. My chapter is called Conquer Your Story: Your Mess is Your...

The Flourishing Note™ Hi Reader, It is mid-July, and the year has quietly crossed its halfway mark again. Last summer, around this same week, I wrote a post called Your Permission to Realign. Two weeks after that, I wrote The Mid-Year Reset. I wrote them because I needed them, right then, as much for myself as for anyone reading. I went back and reread both of them this week. Not because anything has gone wrong. Just because it is July again, and I wanted to see if the words still held up....
